The incorporation of machine translation tools in communication and learning
spaces allows communication between speakers of two languages without either having to renounce the
possibility of expressing themselves in their own language.
This project involves the development of a multilingual communication space
with integrated machine translation for virtual environments (virtual classrooms or academic
forums). The project will also create a series of free tools, with an open-source code and
free distribution, that will allow the use of machine translation techniques to create multilingual
virtual communication spaces or classrooms. The main prototype will operate between Catalan and
Spanish, but tools will also be developed for the Catalan-English and Catalan-French language
pairs.
Aims
- To provide the necessary tools to create multilingual virtual spaces in
classroom and semi-distance learning environments.
- To allow teachers/coordinators and pupils/users of these multilingual spaces
and classrooms to choose their preferred language of communication.
- To integrate the tools developed in the
Moodle
learning environment.

The application of new technologies to language resources that already exist allows for the
practical incorporation of smaller languages into multilingual glossaries.
This project involves the production of a multilingual glossary in Catalan,
English, French and Spanish using free software tools, but is designed to work with any language.
The glossary has been developed solely with information that is freely available to any user with
access to the web. Specifically, terminology from the Spanish version of Eurovoc (the European
multilingual thesaurus) and a parallel corpus of Spanish and Catalan have been used for the term
extraction. The result is a very reliable multilingual list of aligned EC terms in Catalan,
English, French and Spanish. Thanks to this system the linguist in charge of verifying and
correcting the list saves a lot of time in searching for and establishing the terminology.
Aims
- To provide the tools needed to create multilingual glossaries for any language with a
written tradition;
- To offer the opportunity for any language community, including those with fewer resources,
to have their own established and validated terminology and to find their equivalents in the
official languages of the European Union, and
- To take advantage of the freely distributed language resources that the European Union makes
available to the community.
