PRESENTATION / Description & Objectives

The Linguamón–UOC Chair in Multilingualism is the result of a cooperation agreement that was signed between Linguamón-House of Languages and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (the Open University of Catalonia) in November 2006 in order to promote a concept of linguistic diversity that is sustainable, equitable and functional. This cooperation forms part of the multilingualism strategies of the European Union, one of the most significant actions of which is the constitution of networks of university chairs for this topic.

The role of the Chair is to promote research, training, information and documentation activities on multilingualism as a means of social and economic development. The activities encourage international cooperation between researchers and lecturers in this field, reflection and interdisciplinary analysis on the evolution of linguistic diversity in the context of globalisation, the creation and dissemination of knowledge and proposals to help optimise the effects of multilingualism and academic training in diverse aspects of multilingualism.

The initial activities of the Chair in Multilingualism focus on the following:

  • Establishing relations with other chairs and higher education centres hoping to set up a European network of multilingualism chairs.
  • The design of an international Master’s degree in the Management of Cultural and Linguistic Diversity.
  • The dissemination of studies on the development of the will to communicate in a second language.
  • The launch of linguistic engineering projects for multilingualism.
  • The dissemination of guidelines and studies on multilingualism, through conferences and publications.
