The project falls within the area of analysis of social and discursive practices associated to linguistic minority movements in the context of globalization. Our research group is presently focusing on cultural tourism, particularly how questions of language, identity and local, regional or national cultures are constructed in tourist contexts and their political and social implications. This project allows exploring the connections between political, social and economic issues connected to globalization; particularly the new cultural processes of identity construction that take place in particular sites. These issues can be addressed in several ways: a) studying how a minority language is used in tourist sites and services or in other contexts where language practices can be commodified; b) analyzing the discourses on history, language and cultures of particular sites in promotional material and other types of commercial texts c) exploring connections between tourist discourses and historiographic, identity or culturalist discourses, d) tourist preferences in Catalonia and their sociolinguistic implications, e) second residences and the construction of the rural-urban dichotomy. The methodology is primarily qualitative.
Perfil académico
Students must either have a degree in linguistics with an important component in social approaches to languages or a degree in the social sciences with a focus on the politics of national identities.
